What I am reading at the moment ? - I just finished Denis Leary´s "Why we suck...a feel good guide to staying fat, loud, lazy and stupid" and started reading the Keith Green-biography "No compromise" ( written by his wife, Melody Green )
Favourite Films : Also too many. The last great movies I saw were "The king´s speech" by Tom Hooper, "12 rounds" by Renny Harlin, "Survival of the dead" by George A. Romero, "Crazy heart" by Scott Cooper, "Drive angry" by Patrick Lussier, "Rien à déclarer" by Dany Boon, "Hereafter" by Clint Eastwood and "Shutter Island" by Martin Scorcese but I also like many older movies, for example by John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Jack Arnold or Sergio Leone.

1. Hi Ferdy! Thank you for your time and patience and welcome to Heavyworlds.com…so how are you?
Very well, thank you - I´m recording the new Rough Silk album at the moment. It will be called "The good, the bad & the undead" and will be released in March 2011. We are very satisfied so far. Apart from that I´m doing a lot of studio work and touring ( solo and with Axel Rudi Pell & Rough Silk ) and I just got married and we are moving next week - so I´m pretty busy !
2. First of all, I take the chance of talking about your new solo album “Travelling Light”…so, do you want to introduce your 4th solo creature to us?
"Travelling light" is a singer/songwriter album with a lot of slide guitar and piano features. Parts of the album was recorded in Ney York City and this meltingpot of cultures inspired the music on the album a lot. The album before, ".....till I run out of road", was more "earthy" but many songs on "travelling light" have some kind of "big city athmosphere". Also I integrated more jazz and soul-influences into the music. My 3rd instrument, the trumpet, is also more in the focus than on the previous albums. "Travelling light" is a singer/songwriter album with folk-, jazz-, rock-, soul-, pop and even classical- and world music-influences and very personal lyrics. Guest musicians are Mike Terrana, Alex Wenn ( Rough Silk ) and my brother Curt on drums and Anke Sobek ( Nikki Puppet ), Ecki Huedepohl ( who is a famous german Boogie-Pianoplayer - but he is a great bassplayer as well ! ) and André Hort ( Rough Silk ). Johnny Gioeli ( Axel Rudi Pell, Hardline ), Joseph Parsons and Sabina Classen sang duets with me and Michael Hankel ( Holy Moses ) plays a guest guitar solo.
3. What’s the “Travelling Light” for Ferdy Doernberg?
Actually "travelling light" means to travel without a lot of stuff - I really liked the double meaning of the title
4. “Travelling Light” is different than ‘classic’ music that we traditionally listen from you…so how was born all the songwriting?
Besides my work as a musician I always saw myself as a songwriter and lyricist. My soloalbums give me the chance to write all my crazy ideas down and record songs with 7 verses and no chorus , for example. This is impossible in rock and metal-music. That´s why my solo-albums are in the singer/songwriter-style. Also this gives me the chance to work with many acoustic-instruments and experiment a lot with different slide-guitars and vintage-keybards. The inspiration comes from……..life, actually. I travel a lot and see different things, meet different people and have a lot of free time in the bus . And because I don´t drink and don´t take drugs I have a much time to write lyrics on the road. Maybe that´s why there are so many “road-songs” on my albums. I like it both : The energy of rock and heavy metal-music and the intimacy of acoustic shows. Of course my solo-albums are more personal because there´s more room for the lyrics. But when I write lyrics for metal-songs I also take them very seriously. I´m a very open-minded person when it comes to music.
5. “Travelling Light” has a great list of guests. How did you choose musicians and vocalists for your solo album?
Very simple : Friendship ! I am blessed to have many friends who are great musicians as well.
6. 2009 and 2010 are very busy years for Ferdy Doernberg…so, in 2009 we had finally the new Rough Silk album “A New Beginning” which has you also on vocals, and in 2010 we saw Axel Rudi Pell’s “The Crest” ! Do you want to talk about the new chapters of your main bands?
I play with Axel Rudi Pell for 13 years now - the great thing about this band is that we all are real good friends so it´s always a great pleasure to be on the road with ARP. Axel is a great guy and has a great passion for mystic and epic tunes - for me ´the style of ARP is a mixture of Rainbow / Deep Purple / Black Sabbath / Dio mixed with AOR and a lot of Pink Floyd - that´s something many people ignore when they say that Axel would be just another Blackmore-copycat. Also he has the ability to write very catchy songs who are more important to him than just guitarsolos - for me it´s great to play in this band because I can play a lot of Hammond organ and I´m really a huge classic rock fan. And to work with musicians like Mike Terrana and Johnny Gioeli is pretty cool as well. The band has a constant line-up for 13 years now – that´s a real long time. Because we know each other so well, it´s very easy to work together. I know Axel´s taste and he knows my style. We will do the second part of the "Crest"-tour in January and February 2011. Rough Silk was my first professional band and is still my secret passion. We had a very unique style wich I still love. That´s the reason why I founded a new version of Rough Silk. We are recording a new album at the moment. A reunion with the original members will not happen. I´m the only one who still plays. Also the original guitarplayer, Hilmer Staacke died last year because of an asthmatic stroke. Also I really don´t think it would work – musically and also because some of the old guys didn´t leave in a very cool way – to stay diplomatic ! So after the band had finally split up in 2003 I originally thought to let it rest in peace. But then I formed a new band with André Hort and Mike Mandel from a young thrash-band called “A.O.D.” ( army of darkness ) , who had supported us a few times. We originally wanted to give the band a different name but after we had written the first tunes everbody who heard them said that they would sounda lot like Rough Silk – so I asked the other guys what they would think and so we decided to continue as Rough Silk. I have the right to use the name anyway and the other original guys are not playing anymore – so why should we give it a different one ? Rough Silk had many line-up-changes through the years anyway and I´m the only remaining guy but actually it was always more about the band´s style- the name already says it : “Rough” for – hardcore/thrash/death-metal-influenced riffing – and “silk” for piano-parts and singer/songwriter-influences. Our comeback album "a new beginning" was released in 2009 - and our new one, "The good, the bad & the undead", will be released in March 2011. We´ll try to play live as much as possible - but the music business is going down fast at the moment. So it´s impossible to know how the album will sell - we´ll see.
Of course it would be cool to do a support tour with some bigger band - but that´s always a money-thing. But we´re an oldschool band - so we play a lot of shows on our own on the weekends - just like the Ramones : 4 guys in a van !!!! Whereever there´s power to plug in : We play !!!! We just signed a new booking contract and don´t have problems with setting up our stuff ourselves to play and afterwards tear down again and drive on to the next show. Many bands don´t do that anymore !! It will not be easy I´m pretty sure - but we don´t make this album for money - me made it because we love this music. That´s one of the reasons why I wanted to have a band with young and idealistic musicians and not some old mercenaries who play for money only.
7. If we look to your biography there’s an amount of bands, projects, guest apperances and tours that you made in more than 20 years of career…which is the favorite moment of your life as musician?
Wow - that´s hard to say. There were many great moments in my life. You always learn new things or pick up a different view on things when you work with different people. Some have influenced me more and some less – but even from bad experiences you can learn a lot ! It was great to meet many of my idols and some of them even became good friends of mine ! I had the chance to travel a lot and see many different places and meet many great people.
8. I’ll take you to the roots...which are your influences and what do you listen to now?

My favorite trumpet players are Herb Alpert and Miles Davis. I´m a very open minded person. I like music in general not only one style. If it comes to metal besides all the classic bands I really like many real heavy bands like death metal- ( for example Morbid Angel, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Six Feet Under, Death, Atheist, At tThe Gates ), thrash- ( for example Slayer, Testament, Kreator, Machine Head, Metallica, Laaz Rockit, Holy Moses, Destruction ) and even some black-metal-bands like Absu, Venom or Dimmu Borgir. Many people wouldn´t expect that from me but I started in a Ramones-like punkband called "The Wabbles" - that was my first band. I was for example always into New York Hardcore. Agnostic Front are one of my all time favorite bands. But so are Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman or even Bon Jovi & Ratt. 9. Guitars, slide guitars, trumpet, keyboards, vocals and etc… so, how was born Ferdy Doernberg musically? Which is the instrument that you prefer to play?
I can´t tell - I play whatever fits to the song. As a keyboardplayer I prefer vintage keyboards like Hammond, piano, Wurlitzer and Moog - I´m more a player than a programmer. Slide guitar was always a huge passion of mine. For me the song is more important than the instrument I play.
10. If you have the possibility to give some suggest to young musicians, which will they be?
I think many young metal fans will hate me for this - but you can learn from many kinds of music - not only metal ! Even Eros Ramazotti is a really good musician ! I think that it´s very important to stay open-minded – not only musically but in general. I hate nothing more than intolerant and stupid people.
11. Talking about the future: which are the plans for next months/year in Ferdy’s life?
Nothing special - touring - recording - writing and also –last but not least : live !!!! I´ll work on my next solo album - play many acoustic shows as a solo artist and also tour with Rough Silk and Axel Rudi Pell. And also work with whoever may call me ! Sometimes things happen very quick in the music business : You get a phonecall and 2 days later you sit in a plane to somewhere ! ), I´ve learned one thing : Most of the things in life you can´t plan anyway – we are oh so sure how things will turn out and then sudenly everything changes and all our carefully made plans are nothing but dust in the wind… So maybe it´s better to talk about hopes : I hope to stay busy, healthy, lucky and maybe something cool will come my way – who knows ?

Hardline: Hallo Ferdy, zu allererst meinen herzlichen Glückwunsch zur Vermählung!
HL: Du bist nun bereits ein paar Wochen verheiratet. Wie schmeckt dir das Eheleben?
Danke sehr - eigentlich nicht so viel anders als vorher. Wir waren auch nicht auf Hochzeitsreise sondern stecken schon wieder mitten in der Arbeit. Ich bin schon wieder im Studio und wir nehmen das neue Rough Silk-Album auf. Meine Frau ist ja auch Musikerin und ihre Band Nikki Puppet sind gerade am Songscheiben für die nächste CD.
HL: Willst du uns ein bisschen über die Hochzeit und die anschließende Party erzählen? Es waren ja auch einige bekannte Gesichter aus der Musikszene geladen!
Ja, das stimmt zwar, z.b. Francis Buchholz, Joseph Parsons, Axel Rudi Pell, Helge Engelke und andere waren da - aber nicht aufgrund ihres Bekanntheitsgrades, sondern weil es meine Freunde sind. Viele konnten leider nicht, da sie irgendwo gespielt haben, wie zum Beispiel Mike Terrana, der mit Kee Marcello in Norwegen war - aber das ist ja normal bei Musikern in der Festivalsaison. Da auch viele meiner Freunde in Amerika leben, konnten da natürlich auch viele nicht kommen.
Aber auch so hatten wir ca. 150 Leute. Es war auch nicht so ganz die typisch-spiessige Hochzeitsfeier - sondern wir haben es draussen gamcht und hatten eine Bühne mit viel Live-Musik. Unter anderem spielten wir mit unseren Bands Rough Silk und Nikki Puppet und ausserdem gab es noch schöne Jams z.B. mit Axel ( Rudi Pell ), den Blumen und anderen.
Mein Dad war früher u.a. auch Pastor und hat die Trauung im Zelt gemacht - das war klasse !
HL: Neben deiner Tätigkeit als Keyboarder bei Axel Rudi Pell bist du noch an diversen anderen Projekten (sowohl als Studiomusiker als auch live) beteiligt und deine Frau Anke zupft bei Nikki Puppet den Bass. Wie lassen sich eure Aktivitäten mit einem „geregelten“ Eheleben und einer (vielleicht) damit verbunden Familienplanung in Einklang bringen?
Warum sollte das nicht gehen ? Das funktioniert doch bei anderen auch gut... Ich finde es sehr angenehm, daß Anke auch Musikerin ist, da sie dadurch viel besser damit umgehen kann. Früher lief es ja immer darauf hinaus, daß irgendwann einmal der Satz fiel : "Du kannst jetzt wählen : Die Musik oder ich !" - und das war in meinem Falle dann leider eben doch immer die Musik. Wir werden auf jeden Fall weiter aktiv bleiben.
HL: Aber nun zu deiner neuen Soloscheibe „Travelling Light“. Der Albumtitel klingt äußerst doppelsinnig. Welche Bedeutung hat er für dich persönlich?
Hier geht es um die Beweggründe dafür, Musiker zu werden. Max Weinberg ( der Drummer von Bruce Springsteen, mit dem ich mal die Ehre hatte, spielen zu dürfen ) sagte mal zu mir : „Some are in it for the lifestyle – and some for the music – that´s the difference !“ ) und daraus ist der Song entstanden. „Travelling light“ bedeutet zwar „wandelndes Licht“ aber eigentlich heisst es „ohne viel Gepäck zu reisen“. Dieses kleine Wortspiel gefiel mir so gut, dass ich es als Albumtitel nahm. Das zum Song gehörige Frontcoverphoto hat übrigens Francis Buchholz, der ehemalige Bassist der Scorpions, direkt vor dem BB King´s Club auf der 42nd Street in New York geschossen, als wir auf den Van warteten. Francis macht großartige Photos und seine Bilder unterstreichen die Athmosphäre der CD noch einmal. Ich wollte den Song sehr rockig haben - aber trotzdem völlig akustisch ohne auch nur ein elektrisches Instrument. Und ich denke, das ist ein gelungenes Experiment.
HL: Du hast auf dem Album wieder viele (darunter einige exotische anmutende) Instrumente selbst gespielt. Welches Instrument stellte für dich die größte Herausforderung dar? ... Warum?
Puh, das kann man so gar nicht sagen - klar gibt es Parts, auf die ich sehr stolz bin - aber auf welchem Instrument sie letztendlich gespielt werden, ist für mich eher zweitrangig - da geht es mir immer mehr um bestimmte Melodiebögen oder auch eher um den Song an sich....
Ich spiele ganz grob gesagt, Tasten und Saiten und habe mich da ein bischen auf Slide-Gitarren und Hammond- bzw. Piano spezialisiert. Die meisten Instrumente, die ich so spiele, sind dann eben auch artverwandt
( Pedal Steel, Mandoline, Akkordeon ) - also auch Tasten- oder Saiten-Instrumente - die einzigen völlig anders gearteten Sachen sind dann diverse Percussion-Instrumente und die Trompete. Das habe ich allerdings früher richtig klassisch gelernt. Ich hatte mit 6 mit Klavier angefangen und mit 9 mit Trompete, da meine Eltern mich auf´s Musikstudium vorbereiten wollten - und da braucht man 2 Instrumente.
Als Kind habe ich das natürlich gehasst - heute bin ich ihnen natürlich unendlich dankbar dafür - auch wenn dann mit 12/13 die ersten Bands dazwischen kamen und ich vom "Weg abkam"......
HL: Wie schon auf dem Vorgänger „… ’Till I Run Out Of Road” hast du auch auf der neuen Scheibe ein paar namhafte Gäste geladen. Neben deinem ARP-Kumpel Johnny Gioeli, konntest du u. a. Joseph Parsons (Hardpan) oder Sabina Classen (Holy Moses) als Gäste gewinnen. Wie kam es zur jeweiligen Zusammenarbeit?
Ganz einfach : Freundschaft !!! Auf meinen Soloalben spielen und singen nur Freunde von mir - da geht es nicht um Geld oder ähnliches - nur um Freundschaft und Musik.
HL: Mit Joseph Parsons hast du den interpretationsreichen Titel „May God Save Us From Religion“ geschrieben und aufgenommen. Erzähl uns doch bitte mehr über diesen zum Nachdenken anregenden Song.
„May God save us from religion“ ist ein Duett mit dem amerikanischen Singer/Songwriter Joseph Parsons aus Philadelphia, der aus dem Hooters-Umfeld stammt und sowohl mit seiner Band Hardpan als auch solo erfolgreich ist und mit dem ich 2006 auf Tour war und mich angefreundet habe. Joseph ist großartig und wenn ich seinen Beitrag zu dem Song höre, bekomme ich immer noch eine Gänsehaut. Dasselbe gilt für Mike Terrana´s Percussion-Arbeit – Wahnsinn !! Das sind keine Samples – das sind 24 Spuren voller Congas, Bongos, Kuhglocken, Shaker, Tiumbales, etc. , die Mike nach und nach über seine eigentlichen Drumspuren „aufgetürmt“ hat – die meisten kennen ihn ja eher als Metal-Drummer – aber das ist nur eine von Mike´s Facetten. Den Text haben Joseph und ich gemeinsam geschrieben und jeder von uns hat sich unabhängig voneinander Gedanken zu dem Satz „May God save us from religion“ gemacht und auch jeder seine Einstellung zu Glauben und Religion eingebracht. Ich kann hier darum auch nur zu meiner persönlichen Einstellung etwas sagen.
Ich bin nicht wirklich religiös und denke, das alle Religionen von Menschen gemacht wurden. Ich glaube durchaus, dass es irgendetwas Höhergestelltes gibt – glaube aber auch, dass wir Menschen nicht im Entferntesten in der Lage sind, dieses auch nur ansatzweise verstehen zu können. Deshalb glaube ich auch nicht, dass eine der Religionen diese „Macht“ oder wie immer man es auch nennen möchte – vielleicht auch einfach nur „Natur“ ! – verkörpert. In jeder Religion ist sicherlich ein ganz kleiner Teil des Ganzen enthalten – aber wirklich nur dieses ! Von mir aus soll jeder an das glauben, was ihn glücklich macht – aber sobald es dann zu Alleinigkeitsanspruch und religiöser Intoleranz und den daraus Entstehenden Dingen kommt, habe ich damit deutliche Probleme. Wobei ja auch sehr oft religiöse Gründe nur vorgeschoben werden…….
Aber das ist wie gesagt nur meine Meinung, die sich nicht mit Joseph´s decken muß.
HL: Sabina Classen hat die „Growlings“ und die Harmony-Vocals zu „Integrity“ beigesteuert. Welche Botschaft steckt hinter der kontrastreichen Nummer?
– „I officially declare myself an enemy of the music business“ – klarer geht´s ja kaum – oder ?
Hier geht es zum Beispiel darum, dass in den größeren Medien alles nur noch auf Bestechung ( z.B. durch das Buchen von Anzeigen ) basiert und nicht mehr auf der Qualität von Musik.
Ich bin der Meinung, dass es nicht wirklich eine schlechte Sache ist, dass das Musikbusiness derartig den Bach runter geht, da sich das Ganze a) verselbstständigt hat und sich b) hinterher die Spreu vom Weizen trennen wird – d.h. wer in der Lage ist, ohne viel Technik, Tourbus, Crew und Aufwand live zu spielen und sich auch nicht zu schade ist, sein Equipment selbst aufzubauen, wird auch weiterhin spielen können, da es immer Musik geben wird – die selbsternannten „Rockstars“ und vor allem die „Businessparasiten“ hingegen werden es nicht mehr ganz so leicht haben.
Aber ich denke, auch dieser Text müsste für sich selbst sprechen – oder ?
Muskalische Gäste waren hier Michael Hankel und - wie schon erwähnt - Sabina Classen von Holy Moses – beides sehr gute Freunde von mir. Mit Holy Moses habe ich viel live gespielt und für ihr letztes Album – ein Konzeptalbum – auch viele Zwischenspiele komponiert und gespielt. Viele wissen ja, daß Sabina selbst jahrelang bei Plattenfirmen gearbeitet hat und alleine deshalb hat es ihr ein diebisches Vergnügen bereitet, bei dem Song mitzuwirken. Neben den Shouts hat sie übrigens auch die melodiösen Backgroundvocals gesungen. ( Ja, Sabina kann richtig singen !!!!! )
Die Idee der Shout-Gesänge hatte sich sehr früh entwickelt, da eine der Inspirationen der Songs ein Cro-Mags-Konzert in Hannover war und John Joseph machte zwischen den Songs eine Ansage, in der er ein Loblied auf Underground-Musik hielt, die man nicht im Kaufhaus oder den Mainstream-Medien angepriesen bekommt, sondern wo man viel Recherche im Internet betreiben müßte, um sie zu finden.
Insofern hatte ich bei dem Song von Anfang an eine Art "Mischung aus Bruce Springsteen und Agnostic Front" im Kopf - das ist sicherlich gewöhnungsbedürftig - aber ich persönlich finde den Song super-gelungen.
Nun aber zurück zum Text : Das Musikbusiness, wie es jetzt existiert, wird sich gehörig verändern unter anderem wegen des Internets. Das wird von allen bejammert - ich sehe das aber eigentlich als eine gute Sache an, da sich damit auch die Spreu vom Weizen trennen wird.
Dieses Überangebot, das wir zur Zeit haben, ist doch Wahnsinn.
Jeden Monat erscheinen ungefähr 350 CD´s zum Beispiel nur im Metal-Bereich - wer soll denn das alles kaufen ? Und das Schlimme daran ist, daß die Hälfte der Bands nur Plastik sind. Projekte, bestehend aus 2 Typen und einem Drumcomputer, die sich für´s Photo ein paar Langhaarige dazugenommen haben, brav das obligatorische Schwert hochhalten und natürlich nie auch nur ein einziges Konzert gespielt haben.
Die wirklich guten und talentierten neuen Bands gehen zwischen diesen ganzen Retortenbands natürlich unter, wenn sie nicht wirklich viel Glück bzw. viel Geld in der Hinterhand haben.
HL: Gibt es auf „Travelling Light“ einen bestimmten Song, der dir besonders viel bedeutet? – Wenn ja, warum?
Eigentlich alle - das wechselt täglich........
HL: Beim genaueren Betrachten der CD ist mir der Hinweis „Side 1 – 45 rpm“ aufgefallen. Gibt es auch eine „Side 2“ auf „Travelling Light“? ;-)
Nee - das war eher als kleine Homage an selige Vinyl-Tage gedacht - hat aber keinen tiefergehenden Hintergrund......
HL: Gibst du als Solokünstler auch Konzerte? Mit deiner Frau Anke, die auf dem Album den Großteil der Bassarbeit übernommen hat, und deinem Bruder Curt, der auch ein paar Nummern eingetrommelt hat, könntet ihr ja sozusagen als „Familienunternehmen“ auftreten. ;-)
Ja klar - ich spiele sehr viel solo - ich habe schon mehrere Touren solo im Vorprogramm gespielt u.a. mit Jeff Kollman, John Wesley Harding, Nils Lofgren, Joseph Parsons und Jason Ringenberg - ausserdem spiele ich zur Zeit durchnittlich 2 - 3 Solo-Konzerte pro Woche - meistens in Kulturzentren - auch gerne bestuhlt - denn dann hören die Leute besser zu - was bei einem Akustikkonzert ja duchaus Sinn macht. Ich spiele meistens ganz alleine und wechsele dann zwischen Klavier und Slidegitarre hin- und her. Teilweise spiele ich aber auch spezielle Shows mit Anke am Kontrabass und Mike Mandel von Rough Silk als Trio - manchsmal auch mit Mike als Duo - je nach Lage und Budget.
Wie vorhin schon gesagt, bin ich der Meinung, daß die Krise im Musikbusiness nicht wirklich nur etwas Schlechtes darstellt. Natürlich gibt es deutlich weniger Unterstützung seitens der Plattenfirmen - aber ich bin sowieso ein großer Fan des "Do-it-yourself-Prinzips". Dafür sind sich viele gerade im Metal-Bereich zu fein - aber mit meinen Solosachen fahre ich auch jedes Wochenende irgendwohin, baue meinen Kram selbst auf, spiele die Show, baue selbst wieder ab und fahre zum nächsten Gig. In Amerika ist das - ausser bei den ganz großen Acts - gang und gäbe - aber hier haben alle noch diese Business-Brille auf und wenn man dann zu einem Konzert geht und 2 Nightliner vor der Tür stehen, im Club ungefähr 20 Leute mit Tourpässen rumstehen aber nur 40 zahlende Gäste, dann fragt man sich doch, wie zur Hölle sich das denn finanzieren soll !!!
Da wird es in den nächsten Jahren ein großes Umdenken geben müssen.
HL: „Travelling Light“ ist mittlerweile dein 4tes Soloalbum. Welchen stellenwert hat es für dich im Vergleich zu den Vorgängern, die allesamt mehr oder weniger auch in der Singer/ Songwriter-Ecke beheimatet sind?
Grundsätzlich findet man als Künstler natürlich immer sein neuestes Werk am Besten. So geht´´s mir natürlich auch mit der neuen CD, die - im Gegensatz zum eher „ländlich geprägten“ Vorgänger „…`till I run out of road“, der mehr eine Mischung aus Folk-Rock, Brit-Pop und Singer/Songwriter-Material war – meiner Meinung nach ein gewisses Großstadt-Flair aufweist - wohl auch dadurch bedingt, dass Teile der neuen CD in New York aufgenommen wurden ( ja, das is auch New York auf dem Cover ! ), was einen ziemlichen Einfluß hatte. So finden sich auf der neuen CD neben vielen Elementen des Vorgängers auch Jazz- und Soul-Einflüsse, die es so auf dem Vorgänger eher nicht gab. Auch ist die neue Platte deutlich dynamischer – es gibt mehr wirklich leise Momente und im Gegenzug dazu aber auch deutlich lautere und härtere Parts als auf dem Vorgänger. Auch die Trompete und das akustische Piano und haben deutlich mehr Raum und Funktion als auf „…`till I run out of road“.
Ich denke, das ist dafür verantwortlich, dass die CD in einigen Reviews die als sehr "amerikanisch" empfunden wurde. Ich persönlich denke aber immer noch, dass es auch viele britische Momente auf der CD gibt – so habe ich nach wie vor viele klassische Modulationen und „Beatles-Harmonien“ benutzt und meine Vorbilder an der – natürlich eher amerikanisch geprägten – Slide-Gitarre sind dann auch oft eher Engländer oder Iren wie z.B. David Gilmour, George Harrison, Chris Rea, Rory Gallagher und natürlich Jeff Beck, der auch einer meiner Haupteinflüsse als „Nicht-Slide-Gitarrist“ ist, als viele der – natürlich auch großartigen - Bluesleute. Ich denke, auch in den Texten ist sehr viel britischer Humor und Sarkasmus enthalten.
Ich bin ja auch Halb-Engländer und denke, das sollte ich auch nicht verleugnen und nicht versuchen, „Coca-Cola nach Amerika zu verkaufen“.
Nichtsdestotrotz mag ich aber alle meine Solo-CD´s immer noch sehr gerne. Ich habe letztens erst wieder die allererste Solo-CD "Just a piano an a handful of dreams" gehört und war doch positiv überrascht. Allerdings finde ich im Nachhinein, daß die ersten beiden Solo-CD´s doch eher etwas zerfahren wirken, während die letzten beiden in sich deutlich geschlossen wirken.
HL: Außerdem bist du noch die treibende Kraft hinter Rough Silk. Von der Band hat man ja schon lange nichts mehr gehört. Wie ist in dieser Angelegenheit der aktuelle Stand der Dinge?
Na ja, so lange ist es doch gar nicht her...........wir haben doch im April 2009 erst unsere "Comeback"-CD "A new beginning" veröffentlicht.
Die Band hatte sich ja 2003 aufgelöst, nachdem die 3 Mitglieder der "End of Infifnty" - Besetzung sich sozusagen in die "Rock-Rente" zurückgezogen hatten. Damit war das Thema für mich auch eigentlich erledigt.
Nach dem Split konzentrierte ich mich auf meine Solosachen und spielte viel mit Axel Rudi Pell, in dessen Band ich nun schon seit 13 Jahren festes Mitglied bin, und tourte ausserdem mit Uli Jon Roth, John Wesley Harding, Holy Moses, Therion, Jason Ringenberg und vielen anderen.
Irgendwann hatte ich dann aber viele Ideen für Metal-Songs, die definitiv nicht auf meine Soloalben gepasst hätten und vermisste es irgendwie, eine "eigene" Metalband zu haben. Also gründete ich mit André Hort und Mike Mandel, mit denen ich schon länger befreundet war, da ich u.a. das Album ihrer Band A.O.D. produziert hatte und sie mit A.O.D. auch bei diversen Gigs als Vorgruppe von Rough Silk gespielt hatten.
So begannen wir, zusammen Songs zu schreiben und irgendwann hatten wir dann genug Material für ein Album.
Ursprünglich wollten wir der Band einen ganz anderen Namen geben, aber als wir den ersten Freunden die Songs vorspielten, sagten die alle einstimmig, daß das mehr nach Rough Silk klingen würde als die letzten RS-Alben. Ich denke, Rough Silk haben es als eine der wenigen Bands geschafft, einen eigenen Stil zu entwickeln, der bereits im Bandnamen manifestiert wird : . "Rough" steht für die teilweise sehr harten trashigen und im Riffbereich sogar Hardcore- und Death Metal-beeinflussten Metaleinflüsse und "Silk" für die untypischen leisen Töne,
Singer/Songwriter-Elemente und Pianoparts.
Da die anderen Originalmitglieder sowieso nichts mehr machen und ich die Namensrechte besitze, überlegten wir kurz und so wurden wir zur Neuauflage von Rough Silk. Nun brauchten wir nur noch einen Drummer, den wir nach kurzer Suche in Alex Wenn fanden.
Mir war sehr wichtig, daß alle Mitglieder die Band als eine wirkliche Band ansehen und nicht als ein weiteres Projekt. Das war auch der Grund, warum ich keine satten, nur am Geld interessierten Profi-Musiker aus anderen Bands haben wollte, die, bevor sie ein Instrument anfassen erstmal fragen, wieviel sie denn dafür bekämen, sondern junge und enthusiastische Cats, die wirklich noch Gas geben wollen.
Wir wohnen alle im Radius von 20 Kilometern und haben einen Proberaum - und sind also eine "richtige Band" im klassischen Sinn. Das gibt es leider nicht mehr so oft.
